John Travolta's career can be described as a roller coaster. It was cloudy with films like Saturday Night Fever and Grease only to dive deep into the bowels of the Look Who's Talking trilogy, that is until Quentin Tarantino put his hand on him. Eventually, he was slowly descending the slopes with The Punisher and Brigade 49 more cement it down. Now, tracks are looking for above with A Love Song for Bobby Long, a film that lightning strikes twice as John Travolta provides the best performance of his career.
Trailer Park winded teenager Will (Scarlett Johansson) returns home to New Orleans, when the rumor of the death of his mother coming. Expecting that the abandonment, to her surprise, she finds two strangers living in his childhood home. Bobby Long (John Travolta), a former college professor turned raging alcoholic, and Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht), a protégé of Bobby, who also has a penchant for drinking, that winded report was the desire of his mother to leave all three in the house. The trio must find a way to make a home for themselves together to overcome each of their troubled past to move forward in their lives.
Travolta has been knocked down before the old losers, but not with experience, as seen here. His portrayal of the title character, not only to me smiling at his lack of hygiene, but also impresses with its southern charm. I am convinced that normally dyed hair and decided to show his vulnerability in this silver-haired character. "Bobby" is bad, charismatic, pathetic, compassionate, all are transmitted only by baby blues Travolta. If you do not receive any recognition for this role, there is no justice in the world.
Scarlett Johansson continues to make great choices of roles. Between this film and in good company, which opens the same day as Bobby Long, easy to say that this young beauty has nowhere to go but up. Gabriel Macht first caught my eye in the great indie comedy Parsons flight. His appearance in the film has Johnny Knoxville acting chops to test for the first time. The Bobby Long, is the third wheel in this machine, but still shines brighter than both Travolta and Johansson. Maybe it was that he had the overwhelming support of the two principles familiar film that makes him stand out, but I'm more inclined to say that he was the perfect secret ingredient to help cook up this great recipe cajun.
The writer / director Shainee Gabel made his directorial debut with Bobby Long. She had this movie in development for years and waited for the right time for the right of all. What he did. His screenplay, based on the novel will be published shortly Off Magazine Street, is limited and the dialogue is written well. Not once that sounds like the actors were simply reciting lines from a page, which can often be the case in similar circumstances. The film comes off as a thoughtful game with large environments and an expanded universe. Shainee Congratulations, welcome to the big leagues!
With stellar performance stars John Travolta, Scarlett Johansson, Gabriel Macht, and unknown, Love Song for Bobby Long goes beyond serenade to submission. About two hours laughing, crying, and, above all, think.
